LOCAL PARTNERSHIP

Raising a Reader, a program created in 2020 by a former AmeriCorps member, is now supported by Read 2 Lead in partnership with UnityPoint Grinnell OB departments and local clinics. The program provides newborns and infants and their families with age-appropriate books, quick reading tips, science-based research excerpts, a Dolly Parton Imagination Library registration form, and information on the top 10 Kindergarten Readiness Skills (as recommended by early childhood specialists in the GNCSD) to encourage and support early literacy.

LITERACY CARE PACKAGES

Through local grant funding, community book and blanket drives and special partnerships with quilt making groups, such as The Midland Quilt Makers and the Life Responsibilities Class at Grinnell High School, our earliest learners (Birth - five) are provided with their own personalized "Literacy Care Package".
Literacy Care Packages include a selection of new high-quality, developmentally appropriate children's books (up to 4 books) to bring home and enjoy over the winter season.  Selected books are carefully packaged with a reusable book bag and include a new blanket or hand made quilt, stuffed animal, information on Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and the local library. A quick tips bookmark to promote shared reading experiences between children and their parent(s)/caregiver(s) is provided as well.  Each package is further personalized for every child by including a high interest book alongside a blanket and stuffed toy/animal that would be the child's favorite color, theme, character or superhero.
